On Cloudsurfer Max: building consensus — a public grade is not available yet; synthesized so far from 6 reviews across 4 creators, freshest review Oct 5, 2026.
TL;DR
The On Cloudsurfer Max is a competent but divisive max-cushion trainer. It earns a "consider" rating because it nails comfort and weight for long runs, but the firm ride disappointed those expecting plushness. If you like On's firmer daily trainers, it's worth a look; if you want softness, look elsewhere.

The On Cloudsurfer Max is a firm, high-stack max-cushion road trainer best for daily miles and long, easy runs. It offers a smooth, rhythmic rocker ride with plenty of foam but little squish, suiting runners who prefer a stable, firmer platform over plush softness. It's also a capable walking and travel companion. The roomy, comfortable upper accommodates wider feet and going half a size up is recommended. Not ideal for speed work due to weight (10.3–10.9 oz) and firmer feel, but it perks up at moderate paces and handles light dirt paths well.

“the Cloudsurfer Max”
“I just hated the Cloudsurfer Max”
“the Cloud Surfer Max, which is the successor to this shoe. That one's very different and I much prefer the OnCloud Eclipse”
“similar in feel to the Cloudsurfer Max and also the Cloudultra Pro on the trails”
“this is the most cushioned shoe in the On lineup other than the Cloudsurfer Max, I guess, which now that's a different shoe”
“So, the Cloud Surfer Max was like the more cushioned version of the Cloud Surfer, and this has even more cushion than the current Cloud Surfer Max, which leaves me a little confused where it fits in the lineup.”
“The Cloud Surfer Max was promised to be an incredibly soft shoe and that never really transpired for me. I didn't feel like it was a particularly soft shoe.”
“the OnCloud Surfer Max is meant to be the premium daily training companion in that rotation. This, we don't have stack height measurements on this yet, but we do know it's at 292 gram. That's 10.3 ounces in men's size nine.”
“I've got the On Cloudsurfer Max here. Just released today, just landed on my doorstep today. Now the shoe has max in the title, but it's definitely not in the range of some of those Super Max road trainers”
“The Cloud Surfer Max is literally what the name implies. For better or worse, it's a bigger version. It's a more version of the Cloud Surfer 2. A bit firm, a bit tall, and very much an on design. This shoe retails for $180”
“The OnCloud Surfer Max is the replacement to the OnCloud Eclipse and it sits in lineup as a max version of the Cloud Surfer”
“I have been testing On road shoes over the past week. Cloudsurfer Max and Cloudsurfer 2.”
“This is on the cloud surfer max. Just, it just not doing it for me for whatever reason.”
“the Cloud Surfer Max is using just one kind of foam, Helion, which is on's daily training kind of foam, but they do have the Cloud Tech Phase, which is intended to help the shoe compress in specific strategic areas to give more of a dynamic feeling underfoot”
