Hoka Cielo X1: building consensus — 10 reviews so far to grant a tier, synthesized so far from 38 creator mentions across 10 channels, freshest review Aug 5, 2026.

The Hoka Cielo X1 is a polarizing shoe that devotees at The Run Testers and Runnertia adore as a bouncy, stable, marathon-distance cruiser, while critics at Marathon Handbook found its aggressive rocker, bulky feel, and thick upper unpleasant. The split in opinion means it's worth a try if you value soft bounce and don't care about weight, but it's a risky blind buy — try before you commit. Consensus: CONSIDER.
The Hoka Cielo X1 is best for runners who want a versatile, bouncy carbon-plated shoe they can use for everything from daily training to race day. It excels at tempo runs, long marathon-paced efforts, and interval sessions, with a fun-yet-controlled ride reviewers describe as "bouncy but not unstable," and a stable enough platform to use on easy days and even light trails. It's especially well-suited to marathon runners wanting high protection and sustained bounce, and it performs well for short 5K/10K races too. The shoe is heavier than pure racers, so top-end marathoners seeking a very light shoe may prefer alternatives, but for runners wanting one shoe that does it all — training and racing — it's a standout.

“this is a better better rocker than the um CLO X1, I think. just marginally better rocker on this”
“the Hoka CO X1 has reached 298.5 miles cuz I don't know how to math. Um, but it's 300. Why not? Uh, this has been just a a good old friend to me in the running world. It has nice soft pee. Perhaps too soft for if you wanted to seriously race in it. Everybody already knows that. This is not even really sold anymore. So, I'm going to keep this segment completely, you know, short. The things that I've observed about it over the course of the 300 miles is the midsole is very soft. It really rewards landing right around where my hand is, like right here, uh, because that's where the majority of the foam is, but you can land at the forefoot without bottoming it out. and feeling plate. Uh, and the heel is also I mean I don't really land at the heel so it's hard for me to say whether or not that's going to work for a lot of people but there's so much foam there that I don't see it being a problem. The only problem would be durability with this rubber which I have not experienced. And even throughout the shoe at this uh late stage the left shoe doesn't really have all that much wear. The right shoe, you can see is getting chewed up a bit... the upper material is the weak point of the shoe for me. The laces that came with it were terrible, but whatever... the upper is this like grandma's sweater material. It does not belong in a carbon plated race shoe or running shoe of any type... Love it. Bouncy. We'll continue to run in it... the bounce really hasn't gone completely away yet, which is shocking for Pea. This is a great shoe.”
“the Hoka Cielo X very different shoes actually almost between them especially the Cielo X versus the Metaspeed Sky Plus Cielo is a big bouncy shoe and this is a much more lightweight driven”
“another big favorite for me this year has been the hoker cell X1 which is a different kind of super Sho like it's a lot heavier than the metas speed Sky Paris and it's a lot springier and bouncier”
“Cello X1 was one, SC Elite V4 for some people. Those shoes were definitely more comfortable, but with that came a bit of extra weight”
“it's my favorite comp racing issues but it's not necessarily one that I'd pick as the absolute quickest Mike yeah I mean I think I we've kind of spoken about I think Hawker has had a really good year this year and I think it kind of started with the clo X1 which is you know a very different proposition to the rocket X2”
“one of them is the Hocus yellow X1 which has been a huge favorite here on the channel even though it's not the lightest shoe in the world but but what you get from the Hocus yellow X1 is a really bouncy ride that's also quite stable and just a lot of fun and it's been really durable like I've got 350k on my pair and they're still really good”
“the C X1 is really bouncy really fun I kind of prefer that as a shoe so I've gone for that over the rocket”
“the shoe that I've been desperate to go back and run back in is the hawell X1 and it's just a shoe that every time I've gone out and running I felt really good on over those longer distances there's a lovely rocker in it there's a good level of balce so it's you know it's enjoyable to go and run longer in it but I feel like it's a pretty you know while it is a kind of aggressive shoe I haven't felt like it's been too unstable for me”
“the rocker hasn't started at halfway through the shoe like in a Cello X1 or Adios Pro 4. It's not constantly rolling you.”
“cutout or the Cello X1, even the Wave Rebellion Pro 3”
“if you've run in the Cielo X1, if you've run in the Rocket X3, right? There's very much like a lot of squish, a lot of compression, a lot of bounce, very little ground feel.”
“I had to work hard to get the paces out of there a little bit harder than I would have when I came here and did it in the CL X1 to all of that kind of stuff.”
“it had a similar cutout setup to the original Hoka Cielo X1 with the wall on the medial side, and then the cutout on the lateral side”
“what this really reminded me of when I ran in it was the Hoka Cielo X1.”
“So this has been a dream as a long run cruiser and it you know is race ready. I mean, it's responsive. It's quick enough, especially for the Marathon.”
“when this came out, the Si X1, I thought this was the best shoe ever created by Hoka. How aggressive and responsive it was. But the thing that really captured my heart was it felt like a pogo stick... the downside of these shoes was the laces were really bad... and also it was heavy on the heavier side... 9.3 oz.”
“I got to try the cello X1 and to be honest didn't quite like it we made a review of IT independently and I had a couple issues with it one thing was that I found that the upper was was a little bit too thick the second thing was that the lower and the bottom I guess the midsole and the out sole just felt too bulky altogether the third thing was the rock forward profile felt almost too aggressive for me”
“it's a much better lacing system than some of Hoka's other shoes, specifically the Cello X1. That was that was the worst... I've had issues with the Hocus Yellows because they only have that one gear, max speed.”
“I think if you liked the cell X1 and you like the idea of a shoe that is lighter has a nicer upper has all those kind of same kind of lively bouncy qualities as the yellow X1 but maybe even amps it up even more”
“like the cell X1 was pretty stable for such a high stack shoe such a bouncy shoe”
“I'm going to be running in the hoker CEO x1s uh which I've only done 5K racing before not 10K really like them uh I did about 2 and 12K this morning and it reminded me how much I like these shoes so this is the first time I've properly raced a 10K in them”
“recently I've been testing the Hawker cellow X1 now the reason I've been testing these is because we're doing the awards in the next few weeks and this is a shoe that um I wanted to test in order to make sure that when we did the voting on the shoes I had a good understanding of the shoe because everything I've heard about it from the rest of the testers and other people is that it's a very very good shoe”
“slightly Cruiser speeds and then when it came to the flat out ones it did feel fast and Pacey like it it doesn't feel Nimble it doesn't feel very lightweight or anything like that but it is it feels fast for sure”
“It has that rolling propulsive feel similar to the Rocket X and the Cello X1”
“I actually think if you're a big fan of the Hocus Cello X1 and then were a bit worried about the Cello X1 2.0 when it came out because of the lack of stability in that shoe, the Rocket X1 might suit you really nicely”
“Man, the Hocus Yellow X1 is going to go down in history as one of my favorite shoes. Yeah, it's heavier, especially for what it was intended originally when it was created.”
“certainly borrowing from shoes like the Alphafly or like the Cielo X1”
“The Hoka Cielo X1 has far less rubber than this.”
“It's the Seello X1 versus the Rocket X for Hoka”
“yellow X1 is a really fun shoe incredibly bouncy and a real booming bounce quite durable as well I put a lot of miles into that shoe this year the hon a lot lighter I think if it came to race dat I'd prefer to be in the cloud strike LS over the C X1”
“should with big big throw a boner to the Hocus yellow X1 which I think has been one of most surprising and enjoyable shoes of the year been mentioned the shoe I've done the most miles in this year probably I think just because I used it for so many training sessions because it's such a fun fast bouncy shoe”
“I've tested out the Rock X2, CEO X1, and the Skyward X. They were all fine, true to size for me.”
“the hoker C X1 I think is the bounciest most fun shoe most comfortable shoe looking at marathons”
“I think the Hoka Cielo X1 was probably one of the first that really pushed the idea of plate dynamics, really developed the plate. Now, the Cielo X1 was not a top-tier super shoe. At best, it was a super trainer, but it was the first shoe that really brought an emphasis on the plate, the split plate, the wings, all of that.”
“I'm thinking of the cell X1 the upper was like really thick and not that breathable and this is a shoe that came out last year so I was wondering if Hoka was going the other way”
“maybe an elevated 280 for some Hoka cell x1's”
“the first the first of the runner up both in there and the other one is the hogao X1 uh which is one of our shortlisted pick so as well as hedo X1 cell X1 yeah cell C”
“earlier this year they launched this monstrosity of a shoe called the Cielo X1 which is a racing shoe that's so aggressive that it feels like you're running on a half wheeel”
“the only other shoes that really come close in weight I things like hocus y X1 or the anidas prime X original and they're heavy because they've got loads of foam and it's really bouncy and they you know they're making use of that weight”
“I have the Hokasello X1, and I would still run in that thing. It's just that the tread is completely gone”
